Abstract
Consideration of the distinct sequences within the Northern Belt suggests that the Southern Upland fault (SUF) lies to the north of the ‘conventional’ line in E Scotland, SW Scotland and NE Ireland. Comparisons of clasts in mass flow conglomerates in the Southern Uplands with granites in western Newfoundland suggest large Ordovician and Silurian strike-slip movements, while southerly-derived clasts in Late Silurian Midland Valley conglomerates suggest post-Silurian movements. In western Ireland, the pre-Devonian movements on the SUF probably continued along the Skird Rocks Fault. Post-Silurian movements on the SUF may have extended along the Clew Bay fault zone or the Fergus shear zone. This publication has 16 references indexed in Scilit:
