Abstract
The factors limiting the utility of packings for fractionating columns are considered in detail. In view of these factors a type of packing is described which gives an effectiveness up to 20 plates per foot of height, and has a capacity at least equal to similar equipment of lower efficiency. These packings are constructed of fine mesh wire gauze, and special constructions are described for laboratory use and also for high capacity apparatus. The method of calibration is given and factors are evaluated for comparison of packings for batch and for continuous stills.
