Abstract
Exploration of the cervical cord in anesthetized cats with a microelectrode revealed single unit electrical activity (correlated with respiration) of 3 types. Some units fired only just before inspiration began; others fired only during the latter part of inspiration; a 3d group fired continuously but augmented in frequency as inspiration progressed. Most activity was found in the 5th cervical segment. Injury discharges of different form were also recorded. The amplitude and form of recorded potentials are interpreted in accordance with potential and volume conductor theory. It is concluded that the diaphragm is under tonic control even during expiratory phase of eupneic breathing. Keywords
