BLOOD CHANGES IN EXPERIMENTAL HYPO- AND HYPERTHYROIDISM (RABBIT)

Abstract
Anemia in thyroidectomized rabbits was characterized by a relatively slighter diminution in Hb than in erythrocytes (color index 1 + ), erythrocyte diameter greater than normal, and an increased blood cholesterol, accompanied by normal gastric HCl and a bone marrow unlike that in pernicious anemia. Daily ingestion of desiccated thyroid (experimental hyperthyroidism) produced in 4 normal and 4 cretin rabbits an initial poly-cythemia and increased Hb; when prolonged, a decreased erythrocyte diameter and color index less than 1; no change in reticulocyte % in normal adults; in cretins, a 4-10% reticulocyte response. The total blood volume in experimental hypo- and hyperthyroidism (dye method) did not change beyond the limits of normal variation.
