Abstract
This paper summarises the broad patterns of mortgage lending in Britain in the 1970s as a background to a case study of mortgage lending in Bristol. Building society lending is compared over time and is contrasted with the pattern of local authority mortgage lending. The results of the Support Lending Scheme are also discussed. Finally the whole issue of finance for homeownership, with particular reference to the inner city, is evaluated in a discussion of present policy trends and future policy alternatives. Keywords
