Seasonal Abundance and Distribution of Sugarcane Stem Borers in Nigeria

Abstract
Sesamia nonagriodes botanephaga Tams & Bowden, S. calamastis (Hampson), Eldana saccharina Walker and Chilotrea sp. are some of the important stem borers or sugarcane in Nigeria. The percentage of stems attacked at the Bacita Estate has never exceeded 9.6%. Sesamia spp. are the main borers on sugarcane, and the population ranged from 75.5 to 80.3% among the stem borers collected. E. saccharina is second in importance, and the population ranged from 9.9 to 21.4%. Sesamia spp. have 3 major peaks of attack, and adult emergence is confined to particular periods. E. saccharina is present mainly during the dry season and attacks young newly planted canes. Chilotrea sp. attacks during the rainy season.
