A Comparative Evaluation of Intravenous Pyelographic Media

Abstract
In an attempt to evaluate the newer intravenous pyelographic media introduced in this country, a comparative study of four different media was carried out in the Urologic Clinic of Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit. The media used were sodium acetrizoate (Urokon sodium) 50% and 70%, sodium diprotrizoate (Miokon sodium *) 50%, diatrizoate (Hypaque †) sodium 50%, and a combination of the sodium and methylglucamine salts of ditrizoate (Renografin ‡) 76%. Sodium acetrizoate is the sodium salt of 3-acetamido-2,4,6-triiodobenzoate, with a molecular weight of 578.9 and an iodine content of 65.8%. Concentrations of 50% w/v and 70% w/v were used. Sodium diprotrizoate is the sodium salt of 3,5-dipropionylamino-2,4,6-triiodobenzoic acid, with a molecular weight of 663.98 and an iodine content of 57.3%. A 50% w/v concentration was used. Diatrizoate sodium is the sodium salt of 3,5-diacetamido-2,4,6-triiodobenzoate, with a molecular weight of 636 and an iodine content of 59.87%. A 50% w/v concentration was used.
