The Influence of pH on the Germination of Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Spores

Abstract
The influence of pH and the interaction of pH and temperature on spore germination of Glomus mosseae, Gigaspora coralloidea and Gigaspora heterogama were studied. Glomus germinated best at pH 7, Gigaspora coralloides best at pH 5 and G. heterogama best at pH 6. Glomus had maximum germination at 25.degree. C at pH 7 but maximum germination at 15.degree. C occurred at pH 8. No germination occurred at 34.degree. C at any pH. Glomus is favored by neutral-alkaline pH and moderate temperature while Gigaspora is favored by warm, acid conditions. Manipulating soil pH may increase beneficial influences of endomycorrhiza on crop plants.
