Abstract
Puerperal mental illnesses are found in all cultural groups. Postnatal depression and transient mood disturbance occur wth similar prevalences worldwide, indicating a biological aetiology that crosses cultural boundaries. Puerperal psychoses are more common in the developing world and may have been so historically: a reflection of the importance of organic factors in aetiology. Keywords
