Abstract
There is a saying among the residents of the Synanon-type therapeutic community Phoenix House that if ten people in an encounter group tell you long enough and loud enough that you are a horse, eventually you find yourself putting on a saddle. This saying is told to illustrate the power of group consensus and social control in this type of therapeutic community. Keywords
