Localized Retinectomy Indications in the Treatment and Prevention of Retinal Detachment

Abstract
Retinectomy can be helpful in several cases: retinal inversion and giant tears when the edges are rolled up and when vitreous strands are implanted on to pieces of the tear flaps; to approach the subretinal area (for the removal of glial strands, fluid drainage, and the removal of foreign bodies); and treatment of retinal retraction in nondissectable areas (retinal incarceration, vitreoretinal proliferation, etc.). Most of these retinectomies have to be supplemented by vitrectomy followed by a silicone oil injection, with peroperatory cryotherapy or argon laser photocoagulation.
