Abstract
A fifth-order aberration function is derived for the ordinary Schmidt camera. Colour correction is also considered and a proof is given of J. G. Baker's formulae for the first three coefficients in the aspheric plate profile of a system with minimized axial colour-spreads. Finally aberration functions are used to design a modified system in which the monochromatic aberrations are balanced over a finite field, and the performance of this system is compared with that of the ordinary Schmidt camera by means of spot diagrams.
