Abstract
A requirement of calcium ion for normal insulin secretion in the pig during the intravenous glucose tolerance test (IGTT) was demonstrated in vivo. In the normocalcemic state, plasma concentrations of immunoreactive insulin (IRI) usually increased 4- to S-fold during the IGTT. However, increases in plasma concentrations of IRI during the IGTT were barely detectable in pigs with hypocalcemia. Intravenous infusions of glucose and calcium borogluconate simultaneously in hypocalcemic pigs resulted in an immediate rise in plasma concentrations of IRI. (Endocrinology93: 761, 1973)Keywords
