Benefits from Increasing the Allowable Life of Human Blood

Abstract
A study of the non‐medical effects of extending the life of stored human blood beyond the current 21 days is presented. The beneficial effects consist of a reduction in the percentage of outdated blood and the ability to maintain higher inventory levels. The adverse effect consists of a tendency to infuse older blood. The results of the study show that the benefits of extending the life span appear to be considerable, and the increase in average age of infusion is less than one might expect. The study is based on the use of a probabilistic model.
