THE EFFECT OF HAEMODIALYSIS IN MYASTHENIA GRAVIS

Abstract
With the purpose of encouraging a new approach to the study of the basic physiological mechanism of myasthenia gravis the effects of haemodialysis were studied in eight patients. Five of these patients were undoubtedly improved. Factors influencing this improvement are given, with discussion, as (1) the removal of a possible offending agent due to an overdosage of anticholinesterase drugs; (2) other elements in the procedure besides dialysis; (3) a favorable psychological response; and (4) an alteration in ionic balance. In conclusion, the beneficial effect of dialysis is attributed to the removal from the body of a low molecular weight substance which has a neuromuscular blocking action.
