Interferometric Study of the Modes of a Visible-Gas Laser with a Michelson Interferometer

Abstract
A simple Michelson interferometer and a red He-Ne laser were used to measure the visibility of interference fringes as a function of path-length difference of the two beams. The number and intensity of axial modes could thus be determined for various degrees of longitudinal coherence, obtained by deadjustment of the laser-mirror system. The experiment may be used as a student exercise.
