The recent article by Drs Ernhart, Landa, and Schell1 regarding developmental deficits resulting from subclinical levels of lead displays serious inaccuracies of data interpretation and measurement. Although their rigorous attempt to improve the methodology in this area of research is commendable, there are major shortcomings in their research. These investigators "question reports of positive findings" and conclude that the effects of subclinical lead levels "are minimal." They dismiss the few significant results and would have us believe that it was mere coincidence or artifact that these few significant results were obtained on the "critical intelligence test set."
