Abstract
Simple modification of both cell-type and grille-type ultraviolet photoelectric mercury vapor meters makes it possible to zero the instruments for in-plant operation and provide the power required to operate the instrument in a mine. The zeroing can be performed with the cell-type instrument by carrying a cell-full of mercury-free air to the plant and by use of an activated carbon adsorber or an absorption train of iodine-iodide solution with an additional iodide trap, and dry impinger-containing aluminum foil. The power necessary to run the instrument in a mine can be obtained from a small converter and two small 6-volt batteries. A comparison of the results obtained by use of the cell-type and grille-type instruments and the iodine-iodide method is presented. Keywords
