Abstract
The earliest that a young child with type I diabetes can begin to become ac tively involved in diabetes self-care is probably be tween the ages of 2 and 4 years, when he/she is beginning to follow sim ple instructions and com municate with parents. With encouragement, these young children can assume at least three main types of self-care respon sibilities: making choices, helping with diabetic skills, and communicating changes in their state of wellness. By increasing a child's involvement in diabetes self care, the educator and the parents assist the child's develop ment through allowing him more control over self and environment and helping him to learn how the diabetes regimen fits into the family's lifestyle. Keywords
