Salmonella Isolated in Florida During 1943 with the Combined Enrichment Method of Kauffmann

Abstract
In the central laboratory of the Florida State Board of Health, 8,093 routine feces specimens received from normal food handlers, suspected cases and contacts of enteric infections, were examined by the combined enrichment method of Kauffmann. The technique is described in detail. 107 strains of 27 types of Salmonella were isolated from 89 persons, both normal carriers and cases. The results show that with the combined method, Salmonella isolations have more than doubled those obtained through Selenite F enrichment used during the 2 preceding yrs. An increase of 164% was obtained in positive Salmonella. The combined method was not as favorable for the isolation of typhoid and Shigella. A wide variety of Salmonella types was found, including all of the anti-genic groups. One new type was isolated. It has been described in detail by Edwards and given the name S. Inverness. The antigenic structure is XXXVIII k 1,6.
