An NMR Study of the Structure of Carboxylate CMPO Complexes∗

Abstract
Carbon-13 and phosphorus-31 NMR spectroscopy was used to determine the degree of involvement of the P=0 and C=0 groups of octyl(phenyl)-N,N-diisobutylcarbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (CMPO) in CDCl3in bonding to extracted carboxylic acids. We have shown that the P=0 group is the primary donor. The carbonyl group has a small interaction at low concentrations of extracted acid, but its involvement increases as the acid concentration increases.
