Abstract
This study was carried out to find the incidence in Thailand, the pattern of distribution and the clinical characteristics of [human] colorectal carcinoma, as well as to assess the effectiveness of treatment. The distribution by age and sex and the incidence of colorectal carcinomas as seen in this teaching hospital in Bangkok are similar to those reported from western countries. The main differences are that the proportion of patients less than 30 yr old is higher, the incidence of synchronous tumors is lower, and precancerous lesions are much rarer. Most patients have advanced carcinoma when first seen, which results in a lower resectability rate and poorer expected long-term survival. The operative mortality rate for resection is low, and comparable to those from other centers.
