Abstract
Mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) versus quantum well structures as infrared detection materials are discussed. While MCT has been developed as a superior infrared detector material for more than two decades, the rapid progress in the last few years in quantum well infrared photodetectors (QWIP) is very impressive. Competition and comparison between the two material systems are expected to last for a long period in view of the fundamental advantages and limitations of the materials. Keywords
