Pharmacists' Perceptions of Major Difficulties in Geriatric Pharmacy Practice

Abstract
Two hundred thirty-three pharmacists responded to the question “What is the most difficult aspect of geriatric pharmacy practice?” The five most commonly cited problems were inadequate professional skills or knowledge in geriatrics (29.2% of the sample); patient compliance (24%); physician functioning, including overprescribing of medications (20.2%); communication with the elderly (20.2%); and lack of professional recognition (12.9%). The implications of these findings for pharmacy education and practice are discussed.
