Abstract
Twelve barley varieties were grown on soils of pH 5.0 and 5.4. The varieties which performed best at the higher pH developed severe yellowing symptoms, had stunted growth, were late tillering, and produced very low yields when grown on the soil of lower pH.Applications of 40 lb of N and 44 lb of P per acre in direct contact with the seed eliminated all symptoms and generally doubled yields on soils of pH 5.0.Lime and (or) magnesium in direct contact with the seed had no influence on symptoms or yield.
