Abstract
The AA. have considered all the systematical papers dealing with thermal acidophilic algae. It resulted that until 1970 only one alga was reported near the acidic fumaroles all over the world: this alga was classified under different names, but ever since 1936 it was indicated with the binomium Cyanidium caldarium (Tilden) Geitler. This contrasts with what has been pointed out by the A A. (1970, etc.) concerning the presence of two algae, belonging to different taxa, near both Italian and American acidic fumaroles, temporarily called C. caldarium forma A and C. caldarium forma B. The AA. have carefully reviewed the diagnoses of all the thermal acidophilic algae, in order to verify if any of the binomia instituted by earlier Authors is attributable, even if only partially, to the two algae singled out by them. The AA. conclude by stating that the specific name sulphurarius Galdieri should be attributed to the alga temporarily called C. caldarium forma B, while a new specific name should be attributed to the alga now indicated as C. caldarium forma A. As far as the generic name is concerned, all those used by the different Authors have been rejected with the exception of Cyanidium Geitler. In order to ascertain whether this name must be rejected or can be attributed to one of the algae, the AA. intend to test the material gathered near the Mount Lawu acidic fumaroles in Java (locus classicus of Cyanidium), since the olotype and isotypes on which the genus was instituted could not be traced out. Keywords
