Nature of Nitroprusside Reactive Material in Urine in Ketosis

Abstract
A simple diffusion procedure is described which readily differentiates between acetoacetic acid and acetone in urine. Studies on more than 100 ketotic urines show that the nitroprusside reaction of human ketotic urine is essentially all the result of acetoacetic acid. Data also indicate that acetoacetic acid does not necessarily rapidly disappear from urine. Further observations show that its disappearance from urine is caused by microbial utilization of the compound and that acetone is not a significant product of this utilization.
