Abstract
We describe a new approach for the synthesis of fine-particle gamma lithium aluminate, γ-LiAlO2, which involves mechanical activation of mixtures of Al(OH)3 and Li2CO3 and heat treatment of the products. The formation of γ-LiAlO2 was followed using x-ray diffraction, chemical analysis, thermal analysis, IR spectroscopy, and BET specific surface measurements. The specific surface of the synthesized γ-LiAlO2, 10 to 33 m2/g, is large enough for this material to be used as an electrolyte matrix support for molten carbonate fuel cells. Keywords
