The scattergram: A new method for continuous electrocardiographic monitoring

Abstract
A new method for continuous electrocardiographic monitoring in intensive care units is described. The method, based on the relation between adjacent interbeat intervals, produces a scattergram. It has been found to have important advantages in detecting and following the progress of arrhythmias and in judging the effects of therapy. The display has great visual impact and little training is required to enable unskilled personnel to recognize the patterns arising from common arrhythmias. Several different display devices can be used to suit particular requirements and these are discussed.
