IS PERSONALITY RELATED TO SOCIAL ATTITUDES? AN ATTEMPT AT REPLICATION

Abstract
An attempt was made to replicate previous work relating Eysenck's personality dimensions to social attitudes. Sixty-one female student nurses from a district general hospital completed the P.E.N. inventory and the Wilson-Patterson Conservatism Scale. No significant correlation was obtained between psychoticism, neuroticism, extraversion, Lie Scale, and any of the six social attitude variables. One hundred eleven female psychiatric patients completed the E.P.I. Form A, and the Conservatism Scale. No significant relationship was found between neuroticism, extra-version, and any of the six social attitude variables. The Lie Scale correlated positively with the Conservatism vs Liberalism Scale (p < 0.01) and the Ethnocentrism- Intolerance Scale (p < 0.05). Sixty-eight boys and 65 girls, aged 13 and 14, completed children's versions of the P.E.N. inventory and the Conservatism Scale. Only one significant correlation, the Lie Scale and Sex (negative), was consistent for both sexes.
