Abstract
H. portulacae n. sp. produces brownish watersoaked lesions on the stems of P. oleracea. These diseased areas become black and produce large numbers of conidia. Conidia are brown, straight or slightly curved, rounded at the ends, mostly 9-10 celled and average 110 x 12.8 microns, borne in clusters of 3 - 10 on elongate conidiophores. Mycelium is first hyaline to olivaceous, then black in culture, 5-7 microns in diam.; bulbils abundant, black, ave. 114 microns. Field tests with this new pathogen for biological control of P. oleracea in New York State have shown that high moisture is essential for the development of the disease.
