Abstract
To the Editor:— Your reference is drawn to the article on Lithium Salts, JAMA, Jan. 28, 1961. In this article your consultant, C. Wingard, M.D., states, "There are no therapeutic uses for lithium salts." It is important to note that here is a growing psychiatric literature on the use of lithium in mania. Kindly note the article, Lithium Ion: A Specific Psychopharmacological Approach to the Treatment of Mania (Samuel Gershon, M.B., B.S., D.P.M., and Arthur Yuwiler, Ph.D., Neuropsychiat 1: May-June, 1960). This article states, "Since 1949 Lithium therapy has been applied to 446 cases of mania. In the composite picture 84% of manic patients improved, many to the point of returning to their former positions in society." Several of my colleagues and I are using lithium in the treatment of a manic phase of manic depressive psychosis and find it to be an extremely valuable therapeutic agent.
