Genesis and characteristics of rice soils developed on polder lands of the Shiroishi Area, Kyushu

Abstract
The total areas of polder lands in Kyushu are estimated to be 74 thousand hectares and furthermore, about 10 thouSand hectares are under projection. The Shiroishi area of Saga Prefecture is one of the most important rice regions in Kyushu. Rice soils of the plain formed by the poldering of shallow sea (near-shore) sediment areas in Ariake Bay are characterized by, their high productivity, of rice. To see clearly the general, characterisitics of the rice soils with different post-poldering ages is useful in obtaining a better understanding of pedogenesis in polder lands. The purpose of this paper is to record the fundamental characteristics of the rice soils found in the Shiroishi area and to consider pedogenesis in polder lands.
