Abstract
The structure of language and meaning in speaking, writing, and computing is compared. The "bias" of both writing and computing is toward a radical explicitness that tends to minimize or eliminate altogether the role of interpretation–the construction of a personal, subjective meaning. The cognitive implications of teaching children to cope with this explicitness of writing and computing are considered. Keywords
