Abstract
Sectorial colour changes in Cortland apples showed a marked increase over controls following irradiation of the dormant scions with 2–8 hours' exposure to thermal neutrons. This type of atomic radiation appeared to be much more effective than were x-rays in producing gene mutations. Both sectorial and complete colour sports were found, the latter being very dark red and readily distinguishable from the colour of the normal Cortland. About 5 hours' exposure with a thermal neutron dosage of about 13 × 1012neutrons per cm2appeared to be the optimum treatment for this apple variety. Keywords
