Abstract
To the Editor: If present sales of vitamin C around Burlington, Vermont, are any indication there must be a tremendous increase in the consumption of vitamin C or ascorbic acid throughout the country in response to recommendations made by Nobel Prize winner Dr. Linus Pauling in his recent popular book, Vitamin C and the Common Cold. What is worrisome is that the amounts recommended represent massive doses of ascorbic acid (1 to 15 g), of the order of 10 to 100 times the usual dietary intake of vitamin C.
