Abstract
Because humans are mammals, this group is among the best known of all organisms. Yet in the last decade, partly because of a new round of exploratory field surveys, scientists have turned up a surprising variety of new mammals around the world, including primates, deer, ox, and many rodents. When all these new creatures are officially named, the number of known mammals may jump by up to 15%.
