Abstract
Transfusions of blood from veins draining the ceca of diseased donor birds, into the wing veins of susceptible poults resulted in typical blackhead lesions in the livers of 7 of 28 recipients. There was also atypical involvement of the lungs, kidneys, heart, spleen, pancreas, and the proventriculus of some of them. These infections indicate that Histomonas meleagridis is capable of entrance and survival in the turkey bloodstream although in natural infections the liver apparently acts as a filter for the protozoa and prevents pathology in these unusual tissue sites. This parasite was not seen in microscopic examination of fresh or stained blood smears. Keywords
