Cytologic Study of Herpetic Keratitis

Abstract
Intranuclear inclusions were demonstrated in corneal scrapings from rabbits infected experimentally with herpes simplex virus. The most satisfactory method of preparing the scrapings was to fix them with Bouin's solution for one hour, store them in 70% ethanol, and stain them by the Papanicolaou technique. Cytologic study of material prepared in this way could be a helpful diagnostic adjunct to the clinical study of patients with ocular viral disease. Giemsa staining obscures nuclear details but remains an excellent technique for demonstrating cytoplasmic inclusions, giant cells, inflammatory cells, and microorganisms.
