Abstract
A new general method is invented for analysing the stability of stellar systems. A variational principle that only concerns the perturbation potential is developed in terms of an operator similar to those found in the theory of atomic structure. In many cases it is shown that a stellar system is stable if and only if this operator is positive definite. Keywords
