Abstract
Rand, P. 1973. Curvilinear Relationship between Motive Strength and Performance. Scand. J. educ. Res. 17, 83‐93. An S‐shaped relationship was predicted between motive strength and performance. Basis for the prediction was (a) J. W. Atkinson's model, and (b) the assumption that, given motive to seek success (M8) and motive to avoid failure (Mf) of unequal strength, there is a correspondence between magnitude and direction of motive dominance (M, — Mf) and amount and direction of distortion of subjective probability of success (P,) relative to objective probability of success. An empirical check involving 595 6th grade S, revealed the predicted relationship in the results from 3 out of 6 tasks employed. Keywords
