XXX Congenital Atresia of the Larynx

Abstract
Nine cases of congenital atresia of the larynx are described. The findings in these and in previously reported cases indicate that this anomaly comprises a spectrum of malformations ranging from occlusion of the entire laryngeal cavity to web-like occlusion at the glottis. The development of the larynx as described in the rat is thought to provide the most suitable basis for understanding this anomaly and its possible mode of genesis, and as a corollary it is suggested that the development in man corresponds to that in the rat. We are inclined to the view that congenital atresia of the larynx is commoner than even our experience suggests, particularly with regard to the less severe variants.
