Abstract
The reasons for sensitivity of the vibrational dephasing rate of the totally symmetric stretch of the nitrate ion to ion concentration and cation type are explored within a theoretical model. Direct interionic interactions seem to be unimportant and the data are best explained by the effects of other ions on the water structure. The relaxation time of the density fluctuations around a nitrate ion is altered, thereby changing the efficiency of the dephasing process. Keywords
