Technic for Complete Pancreatectomy in the Rat

Abstract
The Technique of Foglia (Rev. Soc. Argent. Biol., 1945, v. 21, 360) for 95% pancreatectomy is modified and the additional 5% of pancreas removed. Administration of low-residue diet for at least 3 days before operation and a 24-hour fast immediately preceding it insure absence of solid material from stomach and intestine and minimal hemorrhage during operation. Penicillin and saline are given after removal of pancreas. Saline is given 24 hr., and low-residue diet 48 hr. postoperatively. Diabetic symptoms appear immediately or after food is ingested. The operative technique is described in detail.
