Some Effects of Temperature on Zygospore Formation in Mucor miehei

Abstract
M. miehei produced zygospores in liquid culture when incubated 51 h at 35.degree. C. At approximately 54 h, a brown pigment appeared in the liquid medium. Neither zygospores nor pigment was observed when cultures were incubated at 45.degree. C. Incubation at 45.degree. C for 46 h or more prevented formation of the spores. After 46 h incubation at 35.degree. C the organism was committed to zygospore differentiation even when subsequently incubated at 45.degree. C.
