Regurgitation in Experimental Pancreatitis

Abstract
In a series of experimental animals, hemorrhagic pancreatitis was produced by the Pfeffer technic. In another series of animals, the Pfeffer technic was modified by ligation of the pancreatic ducts and resulted in prevention of the hemorrhagic changes in the pancreas. Instillation of gentian violet into the closed duodenal loop at the time of preparing the Pfeffer preparation also prevented the onset of hemorrhagic changes in 14 animals, although regurgitation was demonstrated in 10 of the 14 animals. The fact that gentian violet modifies the hemorrhagic pancreatitis in the Pfeffer preparation suggests that some bacterial agent or by-product regurgitates into the pancreatic duct system and produces the process of hemorrhagic pancreatitis.
