Abstract
Rivers in Peninsular Malaysia under natural conditions were known to have stable regimes and carried low sediment loads. However, as a result of rapid development during the last few decades, river sediment loads have gravely increased. Consequently, problems of soil erosion and sediment discharge have emerged as matters of national concern. It has been estimated that more than 80% of the suspended sediment load is caused by human activities in the catchments. This paper discusses the natural processes and different human activities which contribute to sediment generation, the main types of sediment problem, current sediment control measures and the implementation constraints. Keywords
