Course of study and personality: An australian test of holland's theory

Abstract
A total of 188 male students, from 6 CAE and Teachers' College courses which prima facie corresponded with Holland's 6‐part personality typology, completed the 6 main scales of the Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI) and the CPI. Highest means on all VPI scales were obtained by the predicted courses. Distributions of VPI high‐ and second‐point codes were in accordance with theoretical expectations within 4 of 6 groups. The order of VPI means was in agreement with Holland's hexagonal model on 30 of 36 occasions. Only 8 (of 18) CPI scales discriminated significantly between the 6 courses, and only 2 between the 6 VPI scales. The few significant CPI differences were mostly consistent with Holland's descriptions of his types. Implications of the results for further research on Holland's theory, and for the debate on expressed versus inventoried interests, are discussed.
