Abstract
Toxic substances in the workplace are a major cause of chronic disease and death. Although victims of work-related illnesses are eligible for workers' compensation, the overwhelming majority are not receiving their entitlements. The author describes ways in which social workers and other health professionals may become advocates to broaden the effectiveness of the workers' compensation system and to educate workers about the causes and prevention of occupational diseases. Keywords
