SCREENING FOR NEW OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS OF CANCER IN YOUNG PERSONS

Abstract
A survey is being carried out with the aim of generating clues to previously unrecognized occupational hazards of cancer. The study population comprises men aged 18–54 who are resident in Cleveland, Humberside, Cheshire and the Wirral district of Merseyside. By searching hospital records and cancer registration files we have tried to ascertain all cancers diagnosed in the study population during the period 1975 to 1980. Approximately 3000 cases have been identified. Occupational and smoking histories are being obtained from the patients (or, if they have died, from their next of kin) by means of a postal questionnaire. The data will be analysed on a case-control basis, comparing cancers at specific sites with all other cancers combined. A job-exposure matrix will be used to supplement the conventional analysis by occupation and industry. The analytical techniques are illustrated using some preliminary results from Cleveland.
